The Liberal Government has announced this morning, that as part of a reshuffle, it is re-establishing the ministry with a focus on Science and Technology with Minister Madeline Ogilvie to reassume oversight of the portfolio.
Since the distinct ministry was dropped after the March state election, TasICT has lobbied hard for the re-establishment. The ICT sector provides over 11,000 jobs and contributes more than $1.7b annually to the Tasmanian economy therefore it makes sense to have a ministry with a focus on supporting initiatives to address STEM skills gaps, leveraging technological innovation and growing the digital economy. This importance was recognised by Labor with Janie Finlay having been appointed Shadow Minister for Science and Technology since elected.
TasICT would like to thank the Premier for the decision to re-establish the Science and Technology ministry. We also congratulate Minister Ogilvie on her reappointment, and we look forward to continuing working together to further enhance the ICT industry in Tasmania.
